Southern Alberta has a lot of farming and cattle feedlots,
also a lot of horses. The area is flat, and windy.
We weren’t sure on truck stops along the way near Jasper, so
we decided to top off the diesel (only 35 gallons) in Calgary. It was $1.289/liter Canadian. Calgary is a
large city, population 1,149,552 per The Milepost, but the highways were easy
to follow through. Calgary has its own Philharmonic Orchestra and ballet. There
is Fort Calgary, the Glenbow Museum and annual Calgary Stampede. There is the
Calgary Zoo and Calgary Tower with a revolving Sky 360 restaurant, and much
more. Once you get up to Calgary is when
you hit the hills. It is the gateway to the Rocky Mountains.
West of Calgary is the site of the 1988 XV Winter Olympics.
We stopped at Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino in
Kananaskis, AB for the evening. We found this on freecampsites.net. There is a helicopter glacier tour business right beside the parking lot.
