05/11/19 – Through the border and in to Alaska

At the Alaska border we were asked where we were going, for how long. If we had any guns, fruits, vegetables, fish or wild game, money over $10,000. If we bought anything other than fuel in Canada.

The road is not so good, and got worse once we crossed the border in to Alaska. More evidence of fires.

We stopped at the Tok Visitor Center. They weren’t officially open, but there two ladies there cleaning and getting things set up. They open on Monday, the 13th. One of them helped us find brochures on some of the areas and gave us some ideas. She said there’s a pilots festival in Valdez this weekend, so since we’re this close we figured we’d head to that. I went to a gift shop across the street, lots of fun stuff to see.

We took highway 1 south toward Valdez and stopped by the Little Tok River bridge turnout. A gentleman that lives near stopped by and introduced himself. He showed us some Dall sheep on the hill beside us.

Today we saw swans and Dall sheep.

05/10/19 - Past Haines Junction, Yukon

We're slowly getting closer to Alaska...

Continental Divide

Nisutlin Bay Bridge, the second longest water span on the Alaska Highway at 1917 feet/584 m.

We missed the Petro Canada station at Whitehorse, so trying to look up for truck stops on Trucker App I found one in Canyon. It’s a really small station and Curt wasn’t sure if he should fill there or just go on to Haines Junction. We knew there were some there, but without cell service couldn’t look anything up.  He put in a little bit and then we went on to Haines Junction and filled at Fas Gas. The small station charged $1.478/liter (Canadian money) and at Haines Junction it was $1.449/liter (Canadian)

We stopped at the Yukon Visitor Center which also shares the building with the Kluane National Park Service. There was no one at the National Park desk but we were able to get information from the Yukon Visitor Center ladies and I got some park stamps.

Kluane Icefields

Thachal Dhal Visitor Center was closed, but we stopped at the entrance and saw lots of Dall sheep on the mountain. It was really windy there, and dust blowing like crazy.

World’d largest gold pan

We stopped at a turnout for the night.

We saw a bald eagle, 2 rabbits, 2 moose (1 really close-up on the highway) and 2 porcupines.

05/09/19 –Hyder, Alaska, glaciers, Yukon Territory

We left the RV park and parked our motorhome in a lot beside the visitor center, where a sign said public parking. Then we took the Jeep and crossed the border in to Alaska, to the town of Hyder. It’s a small town, old, with a few businesses.

We went to Fish Creek Wildlife Observation Site, which in season is a $5 charge; it was free now. This is a popular spot during salmon season, as the bears come to the river for feeding.

From there we followed a road and kept driving until we got to an area that had a landslide or avalanche take out the road.

Back to British Columbia.

We headed back to Mezidian Junction and took highway 37 to the Yukon Territory, and then turned on to highway 1 where we stopped at a pullout for the evening. A camper from Iowa joined us for the evening.

Today we saw 2 moose, 1 bear and swans.

Bad roads

Lots of burned area, about 20 miles worth.
