Last days at Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge

The couple replacing us came on Thursday, and then worked with us Friday and Saturday. They worked at Alligator River Wildlife Refuge for the last two months, but they have a POS system in the gift shop, so it was just teaching them the cash register and inventory that we keep in Excel.  We spent most of this week cleaning, fixing, and trying to figure out how everything had been packed in before!  They had a lunch for us this week since we were leaving (a taco/baked potato bar), and we received some gifts.

We ended up having to get a new air conditioner cover as a branch had dropped on ours and cracked it during one of the windy days. And Curt worked on the slides; one needed a new roller and he also put metal pieces under the slide ends to help prevent wet/rotting.

Curt saw our first alligator! There are supposedly some in the canals, but we’ve never seen one, but they said its been too cold. When Curt was driving around Saturday he saw one. He didn’t have our good camera with, so it’s not real clear with the phone camera zoomed in.

We took a trip to Bath and Washington, NC. Bath is North Carolina’s first town, founded in 1705. Being by the river, it also became the state’s first port. Founded in 1776, the town of Washington, NC, was the first city in America to be named for General George Washington. Because of this, the city is still occasionally referred to as “Original Washington.” In 2006 the city of Washington funded an outdoor art project called Crabs On The Move. Large fiberglass crabs were installed throughout the city. Most have been relocated but six can still be found downtown on various corners, principally along Main Street. We also found one in Bath and two in Bellhaven.

Spring is here!

February is gone, one month more to go here. The birds are starting to leave, but we still have guests coming looking for them. There’s a lot of fishermen since it’s been warm. I think crappies are the fish most caught. Crabbing will be starting shortly. The weather has been great, up to 80 degrees one day. The rest of the month it sounds like it should be in the 50s and 60s.

We worked on two windows on our coach. They were starting to get hazy inside, so we took them apart and cleaned them and put them back together. Hopefully it works.


Curt helped clean out some duck houses, there were some owls inside of one.
