Hannibal, Missouri and Mark Twain

Hannibal, in northeastern Missouri, is a river community best known as the 19th century boyhood home of the author Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain). The settings of his novels “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” are inspired by this town. There are many buildings and sites associated with Mark Twain in town. Also, Molly Brown, known as the "unsinkable Molly Brown", a survivor of the RMS Titanic, was born here and there is a museum for her.

We didn’t pay for the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum (can do a virtual tour on line), but we did walk around the buildings, to the Glascock’s Landing to see the Mark Twain Riverboat (which was closed), and climbed the 244 steps up to the Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse. (For those of you not wanting to climb 244 steps, you can drive most of the way up. We found this out once we got there.) We also went to the Hannibal History Museum to learn more about the town and area.
